Introduction - Tatler Media Pack

1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?
Introduced via quote and explanation of Tatler's purpose.

2) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tatler.com - the website). List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader?

89% female, ABC1 90%, Average HHI: £247,168, London/SE: 57%, Average Age: 29. These suggest that the average Tatler reader is quite wealthy, mostly women and are approaching their 30s, stable.

3) Look at page 6. What do Tatler readers think about fashion? How much do they spend?
£847 million spent on fashion in the past year, they 'often buy fashion products after seeing things advertised in magazines'

4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the Tatler audience? What about the psycho-graphic audience group that best fits Tatler?

Travel Guide (January)  Weddings Guide (March)  Beauty & Cosmetic Surgery Guide (April)  Spa Guide (June)  Watches & Jewellery Guide (July)  School Guide (October) The Tatler audience is likely composed of individuals who enjoy the finer things in life, prioritising quality and luxury, aspiring to a lifestyle associated with wealth, status and privilege.

Media Language

1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts?

Serif can be seen on their Logo which connotates volumes about they way the brand is represented, very posh and fancy. You can also see Sans on their cover of Tatler for captions, this shows that they want to make it more readable as it is important.

2) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?

It can appeal to an audience if the topic is something that they have a passion for or find interesting especially as the target audience is older and the topics can be relatable.

3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?

• Conveys luxury

• Attracts classic, stylish customers.

4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. the model, the mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expressions 

A model with striking features, unique style or celebrity status can draw the viewer's eye immediately.

The facial expression can tell a story, it seems that the women is confident in this cover.

The use of pink and blue in the dress can contribute to the visual appeal of the cover and might probably conveys messages

Media Representation

1) What celebrities or famous people are mentioned on the cover? Why do you think Tatler put them on the cover?
Emma Weymouth, Boris' Brother Max. They are mentioned to draw the viewers eyes as their famous/celebrity status is present.
2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?
The cover lines portray a lifestyle characterised by the political influence and social connections
3) Looking at the image and cover lines together, what different groups of people are represented on the cover
 and how are they represented? (E.g. men/women/rich people/race & ethnicity etc.) 

4) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?
The pink reinforces the feminine association stereotype, the model subverts the stereotype of her race not being posh
Social and cultural contexts

1) What types of people are NOT featured in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')
Lower and middle class people as it is a luxurious and expensive brand.
2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain? 

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler? 
The portrayal of a non-white woman on the cover might be seen as a superficial attempt to appear diverse, feminists might take issue with the portrayal of women in a manner that reinforces gender stereotypes or unrealistic beauty standards.
4) Find three other front covers for Tatler from different months. What issues, subjects or people are regularly featured in Tatler?

One features Jenna Coleman, Sofia Richie and Princess Diana (The British Issue, Fashion Royal IT Girls Explorers spies Literati)
